Private Speculations is a performance that revolves around a reproduction to scale of Eileen Gray's room divider Brick Screen (1918). Gray’s designs, themselves inspired by orientalist notions, provided an ambiguous and multi-sensorial organization of space for the sexually dissident lifestyle of the community of queer white wealthy women she was part of.
Hijacked from the museum pedestal, in this installation the screen is allowed to perform and even exceed its architectural role as organizer of space, bodies, and vision, to extend to interlocutor, agent, and listener. The series of actions brings to the gallery an extended conviviality with the object, and brings to life Eileen Gray's sketches for an unfinished 'animal ballet' (1917).
Private Speculations has been performed at Kunstraum Leuphana, Lüneburg, Germany, at Oregon Contemporary Art Center with Allie Hankins, Portland OR and will be performed in April at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive in LA, USA. Collaborators and fellow performers in this piece include Allie Hankins, Lucia Razza, Nick Moncy, Ella Konefal and El Culp, and curators Laurel V. McLaughlin and Joshua Simon. Private Speculations has been supported by a 2021 Regional Arts & Culture Council Make|Learn|Build Grant and a 2021 PICE Mobility Grant of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).
Documentation of its iteration at Oregon Contemporary Art Center can be found here.
